Project Life, CTMH Style

I finally feel like I've got a handle on my scrapbooks and I more or less have a system down which has brought some order into what used to feel like overwhelming chaos! Not kidding! At many points, scrapbooking has felt like something I would never be able to "catch up" with. I know, I know...that's phrase is taboo! So it went from being a wonderful creative outlet to being an anxiety producing endeavor. What!?! That's not why I started scrapping. Studio J really helped me get to a place where I feel "caught up" and I only wish I had started with digital pictures earlier on so I could scrap my older pictures digitally as well! However, now I do feel like I have some wiggle room and can experiment with my scrapbooks again. Sooo, I thought it might be fun to scrap my 2013 family pictures using the Project Life concept but with Close To My Heart products (since I have so many of them!). I'm so excited to do this!

If you're not familiar with Project Life, you can do an online search to read about Becky Higgins wonderful concept, but I will try to give a little description here. The concept is first of all to make a conscious decision about how you want to memory keep. Some people do a picture a day for the whole year. Some do a double layout or half a layout (one page) per week. Some do a double layout per month. Or you can mix and match. You can use pocket pages in which you have your journaling and your pictures. So you could slip a 4" x 6" photo into a 4" x 6" slot in a Photo Storage Page and then slip your journaling into another slot. You can make it as fancy or as simple as you like. You can add in other sized page protectors (or Flip Flaps in my case) too. Since you can use all these little pockets and page protectors, you have the flexibility to focus more on the everyday moments vs. the bigger events (but you can do both of course). Basically, you are not just tied down to a 12" x 12" scrapbooking page but you can certainly add that in whenever you like!

Part of me is kicking myself in the head because that's how I/we used to do photo albums. Stick some photos into a photo album (albeit the sticky, magnetic ones) and maybe add the date or a caption about what it's about, right? But often times there was no journaling, maybe not even a date. The beauty and simplicity of Becky's design is that she came up with these beautiful kits that have preprinted journaling cards so you have a place all set for you to jot down something about your pictures.

Now, I've also used photo pockets in the past, but I never had the jounaling cards all set and ready to go. I never had it planned out, so I stopped. Lightulb! Why not make my own journaling cards ahead of time to have them ready to go when I need them? Just like Project Life! Now this got me excited because the reason I started scrapbooking in the first place was that I love making art and being creative. With this I concept, I feel like I won't get overwhelmed at trying to make something gorgeous everytime. I can simply stamp lines (or print them on the computer) on a journaling block if I want or I can make it fancy if I want. Since the scale is small, it'll be done more quickly and I can even use up some of my ever growing collection of scraps but I can still be creative!

I happen to have a LOT of stamps that will work well for making journaling blocks already. Many of them are retired but I figured that I would still post about some of them in case you have them too.

This one is called Notice The Details (retired) and I used in for my Week in the Life album quite awhile ago.

This is called Comments (retired) and it's perfect for adding lines to journaling blocks that you cut yourself or with the Cricut.

Here's an example of a small journaling block I cut with the Artiste cartridge and then stamped with the dashed lines from this set. I set my size for 3 3/4" and pressed Shift, Accent 1, and the U key. That key has a lot of wonderful stationery looking type of cuts. It also has the plain rounded corner rectangles which also make great journaling blocks.

This was the September Stamp of the Month in 2011, Limited Edition (retired).

This was the Summer Special from this past August and September. It's called It's Your Day.
Here's a link to a You Tube video by Kathy Norman and how she used the stamp set to make a journaling block: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDAW9TY2buk.

This was the Stamp of the Month this past November and it's called, Capture the Date.

And now we come to something that's still available! Many of you probably have this one. It comes with the Cricut Artiste cartridge and is called Word Balloons. This would be great for filler blocks when you might not have or want journaling but want a little something to put into the space.

I don't have this one but it is a current stamp set called Approved.

The Scholastic papers have a lot of grid patterns, notebook/ledger paper patterns, and library pocket patterns which would work well if they were cut down to a journaling block size or as a background mat for plain cardstock. With some of the grid and ledger patterns, there would be no extra stamping needed. It's hard to see details but here's a picture of the paper pack.

Here's that same cut I did on the Cricut but with one of the Scholastic papers.

I also like the Avonlea papers because of the colors (yes, I'm a blue and green girl) and some of the family oriented sayings on the "zip strip."

Stay tuned! In my next post I'll show you some of the journaling cards I made.

Freshly Made Sketches #66 -- Snowman Card

Hi Everyone!

It has been a busy, busy fall for me as you have probably guessed from my lack of posts! While the reasons underlying this are basically good (meaning that business for one of my part time jobs is sky rocketing), I really miss it when I can't create. I have been creating a little here and there but not all of it has been paper craft related -- I'll post about those creative endeavors at some point. The other thing that happened this fall is that my computer crashed and I have been shifting things over to my new computer...and I've been learning how to use it! I have a break from both jobs now so I finally photographed a card and thought I would share!

I love snowmen snowpeople stamps and have been wanting to use Flakey Friends for awhile. I'm going to use these cards as thank yous for my preschoolers who gifted me with some beautiful handmade jewelry and a cute jewelry stand for the holidays. I used the wonderful Sketch #66 from the Freshly Made Sketches blog for my card.

Avonlea Card Box

Here's the beautiful new Avonlea paper pack on another card box. After cutting so many pieces of Roxie for the girls' to put on their boxes last week for art camp, I decided to make one of my own.

Here's a close up of the roses and some bling. All of the shaped cuts here, including the roses, were made with new Cricut Artiste cartridge. With the latest catalog, CTMH has gone to offering some colors which are exclusive to certain paper packs, meaning that they can't be bought separately. The Avonlea paper pack is one of those which has some exclusive colors andI used the elegant Avonlea Off White for the cardstock for the roses.
I love this box. It's a great size to hold not only cards but other trinkets or jewelry. I think a decorated box would make a great unique gift. I also love its magnetic closure.

Busy, Busy, Busy!

The second session of my Kids' Scramping Art Camp is well under way. It is a lot of work but really fun! The girls are busy, busy, busy and doing a wonderful job on their various projects.

Do these look familiar? We started off with card boxes again on Monday. I love how they all put their own creative slant on them. I had precut some elements like rose spirals with the Cricut Art Philosophy Cartridge. Even though rolling up the roses isn't necessarily easy for little hands, they did a great job with it. Liquid Glass was also a big hit. I showed them how to use it to make dew drops on their roses. They used it for that and to put other details in, such as the veins on the leaves or just extra dimension here and there.
It was cute that they all happened to wear flip flops on Tuesday. I couldn't resist taking a picture!

On Tuesday, we worked on making jewelry. Blogger is automatically turning my picture around, sorry!

Wednesday was all about painting and monograms! We painted and decorated large monograms.

We also made a framed chipboard monogram collage--the girls either stamped, sponged, glittered, or did some sort of combo on each of their chipboard monograms and then they put them on some cardstock. This was eventually put into a frame they had painted.

One thing the girls enjoyed was finding out that you could use a pencil eraser as a stamp to make polka dots!

Our last technique today was to use the waterbrush. I showed them how to stamp with a lined image and then how to squeeze a closed stamp pad and use the open stamp pad as a palette to pick up some color.

Whew! I just love it that they are all interested and absorbed by the activities we are doing!
I am also going to be a vendor at the Tri Delta Crop for a Cure coming up this Saturday! I love this crop. It's a fun group and a great cause. I guess it's busy season again!

Display Tray

One of my must haves from the new Close To My Heart catalog was the display tray. I was so excited to see it in the catalog and it was one of the first things I played with when my new items arrived. Here's what I ended up doing with it.

Believe it or not, every item I used on the tray is CTMH (except that I embossed the Sweet Leaf rectangle with a Cuttlebug folder) although some of it is very old. It's as if my hoarding had a purpose...somehow I knew I would use those little doodads on this display tray eventually!

I left my chipboard letter F unadorned but I'm still wondering if I should stamp it or cover it with paper. I do kind of like that your eye has a place to rest. What do you think?

Here are some close ups of a few of the compartments. I used both the Cricut Art Philosophy cartridge and the new Cricut Artiste cartridge throughout my project. The upside down triangle banners (Art Philosophy) are on chipboard die cut shapes to make them more sturdy.

The "Family" sentiment is on some shapes cut with the Art Philosophy cart and adhered to a chipboard die cut and popped up with foam tape. Remember the Canvas Badge Buttons? I used one in the collage below to make the stamped circle "Love This" pop up a bit. I used our old peated ribbon to make a flower (just wrapped aound itself, glued it with Tacky Glue and stuck a brad through the middle). The "leaf" is one of our old Foundry embellishments (originally meant to be a photo corner, I think).

The main banner below is another chipboard element (paper is cut out with the Artiste cartridge).

Supplies used (I'm not listing unavailable products)

You're Amazing: Retrosketch #22

My order of new CTMH stuff arrived yesterday and I got a little bit of time this morning to create! CTMH has come out with a wonderful new Cricut cartridge called Artiste (available August 1st). I sat for about half an hour just looking through all of the things in the accompanying handbook. Go to this link to see the handbook online: http://www.cricut.com/res/handbooks/artiste_handbook_web.pdf

I'll be showing the items I make with Artiste on my blog throughout the week but my first item is this quick little card for my nephew. In addition to the Artiste cartridge for cutting the notebook shaped paper, I used stamps from one of the sets that come with the cartridge bundle, two sheet from the new Avonlea paper pack (solid teal cardstock and patterned paper) and a sheet from the new Scholastic paper pack (graph paper...LOVE stationery themed papers!).

I used Retrosketches #22 for some inspiration.

I love this sketch...it's very elegant and well balanced! You can go many ways with it and I just kept things simple. I wasn't sure if my nephew would want anything too fussy. But I can see myself using this sketch again with a more gussied up card. :-)

Gnome Home

I love the CTMH stamp set Gnome Garden but, as so often happens with me, I set it aside after getting it and never inked it up because I was waiting for the right inspiration! Well, now it will be retiring soon so I thought it would be a shame if I didn't use it before August 1st rolls around. Heart 2 Heart's latest challenge is a wonderful sketch and helped me put my stamp to use.

Here's the sketch:

Here's my card!

Supplies used (all CTMH except where noted): Cranberry cardstock, Creme Brulee cardstock, Chocolate cardstock, White Daisy cardstock, (X7148B) Pemberley paper pack, (C1470) Gnome Garden, (44751) Archival Black stamp pad, (Z1701) Baker's Twine Neutral Assortment, Retired Cranberry buttons, (Z1686) Art Philosophy Cricut cartridge, Spellbinders nestabilities (circles large and small), Cuttlebug embossing folder (Victoria and Seeing Spots), Copic markers

My daughter and I have a long term project (translation: we do a little and then stop, then we do a little more and stop) of making a sort of fairy garden spot in the backyard. So I'm picturing using this stamp set on a scrapbook layout for pictures of our little fairy garden if we ever finally get around to completing our project! Isn't that funny? Getting a stamp set to go with pictures you don't even have?
